I remember how you formed a fatherly friendship with your new labourer at work, Ralph, although he was only a few years younger than you. He was such a quiet and unassuming man and looked and acted just like the character George Roper from the tv comedy 'George and Mildred'. You explained to him one day that you had always thought people were either Extroverts or Introverts but 'you Ralph',you told him..... 'are just a 'Vert'! There was no malice in that and he laughed You then spent many hours talking with him in simple terms and explaining how things worked and even spent a hour walking around the steelworks watching the rabbits and explaining how the planets moved around the sun by placing large stones around a field as if they were the sun and planets. You also got to know his wife, Jean, and helped them set up a trust fund and arranged a evening at the Bay View to raise money for their grandson, Aaron, who had contracted meningitis and had to have both his legs and some fingers amputated. I also remember how you consoled him when he told you that Jean had terminal cancer and how gutted you were when he then found out that he had a brain tumor and died within weeks. Jean died a couple of months later and you had lost another friend.
